Furniture Layout Plans
Furniture also contributes to a work environment informed by the science of ergonomics to maximize productivity and minimize risk of personal injury. Furniture must be ergonomic, adjustable, heavy duty and robustness as well as ensuring that the ergonomic requirements are met.
The arrangement furniture planning need to be considered with other requirements concerned before implement in layout plan. The thing to consider is aspect from architectural consideration, operational considerations, workstation arrangement, off workstation shared visual displays, circulation personnel and maintenance access and verification and validation of control room layout.
Lighting Design
It is proven that a good control room, lighting should be as integrated into the design as the placement of the ceiling, walls and floor. Optimum lighting demands quality ambient, uniform illumination, which is combination of fixtures such as ambient lighting (the indirect, general illumination of the room), and task lighting (focused concentrated light over the work surface).
A control room operators surrounding has a direct relation to their performance, considering in their uptime, vigilance, output, quality and safety of the people and equipment they are monitoring. Here some point we consider to light up in control room environment.
- The range of different visual task being conducted
- Lighting within control rooms should be suitable for all visual task, for : reading / viewing on wall display , printed material display and viewing control system (alarm, dials and etc)
- The age of an operator
- In designing a lighting scheme, attention should be given to the range of tasks performed as well as operators’ age. Its will affect their ability to read the different material required, also where they are positioned within the room.
- Dimmable lighting
- Within the main room control should be provided, which will prevent reflections and glare off screens. Need to take consider the use of different light sources both natural and artificial lights.
- Lighting through window
- As they are found to have considerable psychological value to an operators working linking to external world. The difficulty in controlling natural lights can cover by using blinds to avoid intense natural light.
- Ambient lighting
- Is to enhance the wellbeing of an operator. LED colored lighting is a popular choice, as it is provides a level of lighting whilst not creating screen glares.
- Maintenance Lighting
- To carrying out maintenance and installations within the void of console, whilst the operator is continuing their usual task.
Mechanical & Electrical
Electricals and mechanical spaces are often and afterthought when it comes to building design and planning. In control room design, managing mechanical and electrical equipment and facilities is important factors with competency of a control room design.
Every control room has unique way to integrate power source distribution requirements either way implement on mechanical and electrical on furniture, screen display, fitting and equipment on ceiling, wall, or under raise floor. All this design need to be systematics to facilitate future maintenance also conducting emergency operations for electrical service and protecting station equipment.
Surface Finishing
Selecting finishes in accordance with ISO 11064 guidelines create the comprehensives list criteria for control room. The surface finishes go from floor to wall and ceiling surface. In addition to the ISO requirement, the design must adhere to local building codes for flammability and slip resistance. In addition to emphasizing aesthetics element, every surface finishing must be functional, durable and maintainable.
Some finishes can provide multiple uses, as example acoustic material. Acoustically absorptive wall panel can double as trackable panels or as decorative elements, reflecting regional identity while mitigating sound. By using acoustic – absorptive material can be implementing for ceiling, wall and floor surface.

Aesthetic Design
An aesthetic factor is one of core design principle that defines a design’s pleasing qualities. Aesthetics includes elements such as balance color, movement, pattern, scale, shape, and visual weight. All this elements design are usability, and to enhance functionality with attractive layouts.
Aesthetics in control room can be applied on surface of building (ceiling, wall and floor), furniture or fitting mechanical items. Customized pattern design or furniture allows creating a unique identity and aesthetic to control room.
