Control Room Ergonomics 101
Ergonomics is becoming the popular buzz word that any furniture manufacturer and retailer will emphasize to make users feel comfortable for using their products over others.
Though it seems pretty straightforward, paying attention to control room ergonomics is crucial especially to prevent injury, reduce fatigue and enhance overall productivity.
First things first, what do we mean by ergonomics?
According to the International Ergonomics Association (IEA), who is the leading global authority on this subject, ergonomics is defined as follows:
Ergonomics (or human factors) is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data and methods to design to optimize human well-being and overall system performance.
In a nutshell, ergonomics is the study between the relationship of workers and their environment.
Another name for ergonomics is ‘human factors’, which is the science of designing console workstations to fit the capabilities and limitations of operators in order to maximize their comfort, productivity and health.
The following are some of the most important things which Redecon takes into consideration while designing ergonomically correct console workstations:
- Reduce eye fatigue
- Avoid placing the monitor too close
- Reduce screen glare
- Not putting the monitor near bright light
- Protect the neck
- Design the console with all the necessary equipment in a single line of vision
- Avoid frequent turning of heads to access a device or screen
- Avoid leaning to protect the spine
- Aligning the body in a neutral posture, keeping the head centered over its neck
- Provide supportive ergonomic chairs to avoid operators hunching or leaning forward to look at the monitor screen
- Proper arm support
- Avoid pain and fatigue in the shoulders and neck
- Keyboard and mouse should be placed within a comfortable distance, allowing the arms to rest on the console support
- Keep the neck straight
- Provide headsets to comfortably take calls or take notes at the same time
